What to do and see in San Vito Lo Capo

di Marco

San Vito Lo Capo is a small village with a beautiful beach and a stunning sea, nestled like a precious jewel between the Zingaro Nature Reserve (to the east) and the Monte Cofano Nature Reserve (to the west).

The natural beauties are truly numerous; if you want to have an amazing experience a few days here are not enough!

Therefore, we recommend to spend at least a week in San Vito Lo Capo.

1. The Beach

Crystal clear water, clean sand, lifeguards for safety and a stone’s throw ice cream shops, restaurants… it is one of the most famous in Italy!

From Hotel Piccolo Mondo you can reach it in a moment, on foot, without having to take a car, taxi or bus.

The beach of San Vito Lo Capo is wonderful even out of season: you swim here from April to October!

2. The Tonnara del Secco

Located about three kilometers from San Vito Lo Capo, this spot is one of the most beloved in the area because you can swim among many fishes!

Although the building has been abandoned since 1969 when it ceased tuna fishing operations, the view remains fantastic.

For early risers:

  • we suggest a dawn run along the beach offers a unique experience with the sunrise and a view of the Riserva Dello Zingaro

For those who prefer take their time:

  • visit Tonnara after breakfast is equally enjoyable.

3. The Zingaro Nature Reserve

Continuing past the Tonnara del Secco, you'll arrive at the Riserva dello Zingaro, Sicily's first protected natural area.

Originally intended to be a highway connecting San Vito Lo Capo to Palermo, it’s now a beautiful nature reserve.

There are various trails based on difficulty:

  • those who don't want to walk for a long time can take the easiest trail and stop at the "Tonnarella dell’Uzzo”, a spacious beach with small stones
  • more experienced hikers can explore smaller, more irregular coves like Cala Berretta and Cala della Disa.

You can also reach the Riserva from San Vito Lo Capo’s marina and enjoy the Faraglioni di Scopello. In fact, we can book for you a boat trip with professional skipper.

4. The Baia Santa Margherita

A perfect alternative for days when annoying winds blow on San Vito Lo Capo's beach is Baia Santa Margherita, a beautiful stretch of sea just a 10-minute drive away.

There are relaxing beaches and numerous small coves such as "Calazza.”

Nearby, you'll find Bue Marino, a pebbled coastline, and Isulidda, a small island-shaped rock. The sunsets here are worth capturing! Your friends will be thrilled to see your photos!

5. The Monte Cofano Nature Reserve

This other nature reserve is a bit farther than Baia Santa Margherita, but the scenery is equally unique.

The coastal trail is fairly easy and can be explored by mountain bike. It features caves, towers, and wide inlets with stunning colors.

There's also an ancient tuna fishery that will provide a beautiful backdrop for your photos.

In April, May, and October, when temperatures are cooler than in summer, we always recommend a walk here, making time for a picnic as well.

6. Erice Segesta and Marsala

The small medieval town of Erice, perched atop the mountain overlooking Trapani, offers stunning views and is well worth a visit.

You can reach Erice by car or cable car from Trapani, which is less than an hour from San Vito Lo Capo.

At the top, a walk to the Castle of Venus is recommended: this romantic, historical site is a Norman-era fortress built on the ruins of an Elymian-Phoenician-Roman temple, offering views of the Egadi Islands on clear days.

Always bring a jacket, as it can be windy even in summer.

This excursion includes visits to both Erice and Segesta, but don't leave Erice without trying the "Genovesi" by Maria Grammatico, a must-try custard-filled dessert typical of this charming town.

In Segesta, you can step back in time by admiring a Doric-style temple and a partially excavated theater.

In western Sicily, there's an extraordinary salt pan known for producing some of the best salt. This area offers great photo opportunities.

After visiting the salt pan, head to Marsala, a city renowned for its Arab-Norman architecture and its famous wine.

A walk through the city center and a visit to the Cantine Florio will conclude a day full of memorable experience.

7. Favignana and Levanzo

Expert skippers from our selected companies will guide you to discover the marvelous coves of the Egadi archipelago aboard comfortable boats equipped with canopies for the hottest hours and open areas for when you want to recharge with the pleasant energy of the sun.

You can choose between motor yachts, sailboats, and catamarans.

Alternatively, you can reach Favignana by hydrofoil but you will miss all the beauties of Levanzo.

Keep dreaming from home and explore the surrounding area of San Vito Lo Capo with a small video.

Or book your well-deserved beach holiday now.
