What to do and see in San Vito Lo Capo

di Marco

Imagine a holiday in a new place, unknown to you.

You would probably go to a travel agency to plan times and routes.
Yet, most likely, when you come back you will find that you have not seen anything, you miss something.

It all happened at least once.

Because only guided by locals you can discover unconventional, different, alternative things.

San Vito Lo Capo is a small town in the middle between two Nature Reserves, the "Zingaro" and "Monte Cofano".

If you are reading this post, it means that you would like to come on holiday here but you still don't know "what to do in San Vito Lo Capo".

There are many things to do, many beautiful places to visit.

San Vito Lo Capo deserves at least 7 days, a few days of holiday here are not enough if you want to have a wonderful experience.

Piccolo Mondo is a family run hotel, we live in San Vito Lo Capo, this is the reason why we can advise you on the best things to do in San Vito Lo Capo in 7 days.

1. The Beach

The first thing to see here is the beautiful sandy beach of San Vito Lo Capo because of its crystal clear water, clean sand, lifeguards for safety and a stone’s throw ice cream shops, place for a drink and restaurants.
The beach is a suitable place for those who want to get away from the routine.

From Hotel Piccolo Mondo you can reach it in a moment, on foot, without having to take a car, taxi or bus.

The beach of San Vito Lo Capo is wonderful even out of season: you swim here from April to October!

2. The Tonnara del Secco

It is located about three kilometers from San Vito Lo Capo and is one of the most loved places in the entire territory.

Here, until about 1969, tuna were fished and worked, now the building is abandoned but I suggest you go anyway because the view is fantastic! Here are two reasons:

  • If you are one of those people who wakes up early in the morning, I suggest you leave your room and take a nice run at dawn along the beach. It is truly something unique to find yourself there, at that time asleep means. As you run you see the sun rise. And then, after arriving at the Tonnara you will see the Riserva dello Zingaro right in front! Then return to the Piccolo Mondo to recharge your energy by tasting a piece of cannolo for breakfast! I recommend a visit here more so if you don't like the sand so much but you love the roughness of nature: you'll find rocks, pebbles, but the descent into the water is very simple.
  • Even if you don't want to get up early in the morning, you can still go after breakfast. It is just as nice to stop around 10am, swim and stay until lunch time to bite an arancina while contemplating nature.

3. The Zingaro Nature Reserve

As mentioned above, continuing beyond the Tonnara del Secco, you will find yourself at the Riserva dello Zingaro, a fantastic nature reserve.

Go with your vehicle or ask at the reception for a shuttle: in fact it is about 15 minutes by car.

After leaving the vehicle that took you to the Reserve, you can choose to take different routes based on the difficulty.

Obviously there is also the simplest one, the favorite of those who want to spend a nice sunny day, sunbathe, swim among fish of all colors and take two beautiful photos to send home.

At the Riserva dello Zingaro you will find several coves: the first is the "Tonnarella dell'Uzzo" and is a very wide beach composed of small stones.

If you are a good walker I advise you to continue, in fact you will find other coves, more irregular and smaller, like Cala Berretta and Cala della Disa.

The experience in San Vito Lo Capo must include the excursion to the Riserva dello Zingaro because it is something that really remains in the heart: you can also arrive by boat from the port of San Vito Lo Capo, participating in an excursion with other people. We are always ready to organize the excursion for you, which also includes a set for snorkeling.

You can then make wonderful dives, swim among the fish at the Faraglioni in Scopello.

And then there is also a small aperitif that never hurts!

At the port you can also rent a dinghy to live an exclusive experience at your own pace and respecting your time, throwing the anchor and listening to the silence around you.

4. The Baia Santa Margherita

As I said, we have always lived here, which is why we can suggest the best things to do, also based on the weather.

It happens for example that on the Beach of San Vito Lo Capo, there is the "Grecale".

The Grecale is a wind that blows from the North East and when it arrives, the sea becomes dirty.

The perfect alternative is Baia Santa Margherita, which is just 5 minutes away by car.

Even here, as in San Vito Lo Capo, there is a beach to relax in and many small coves like "Calazza".

Nearby, there are Bue Marino, a stretch of cobbled coast, and Isulidda. I recommend you bring your smartphone or camera with you, it is really worth stopping here and taking two photos at sunset!

5. The Monte Cofano Nature Reserve

This other Nature Reserve is a little further away than Baia Santa Margherita.

Here too the view is unique.

It is nice to walk along the sea, you can ride a bike. Here you can explore caves and there is an ancient tonnara that will be the backdrop to your most beautiful photos.

In the periods of April, May and October, when temperatures are cooler than in summer, a walk here is what we always recommend, cutting out some time for a picnic!

6. Erice Segesta and Marsala

The small town of Erice, at the top of the mountain overlooking Trapani, is worth a visit because of the view that you can admire from there.
You can get there by car or cable car from Trapani (less than 1 hour from San Vito Lo Capo).

Have you arrived in San Vito by taxi?
No problem, the locals will be able to rent a car or go by shuttle so you don't have to drive. In both cases we have some great suggestions for you.

Once at the top I recommend a walk to the Castle of Venus.

The reason is simple.
It is a place rich in history, very romantic: it is a fortress of the Norman era built on the ruins of an Elymian-Phoenician-Roman temple, from which on fine days you can admire the Egadi Islands!
I recommend always wearing a jacket with you because there is a fresh wind even in summer.

On this excursion you will discover both Erice and Segesta but do not leave Erice without having first tasted the "Genovesi" by Maria Grammatico.
They are a typical dessert of this beautiful town, filled with custard absolutely to try!
I was saying about Segesta: here you will take a step back in time admiring a temple in Doric style and the Theater, partly excavated in the hill.

In this area of western Sicily there is an extraordinary salt pan, from which still today what is said by experts is one of the best types of salt.

Even here you can take pictures to share with friends and then go to Marsala, the Arab-Norman city now very well known for the homonymous wine.
A walk in the center but above all a visit to the Cantine Florio will conclude a day full of emotions.

7. Favignana and Levanzo

A daily cruise to discover all unspoiled natural beauties of Egadi Islands. One of the most beautiful water mirrors, rich in history, stories, tradition, culture, sea battles.. A long story about the ancient tuna-fishing tradition, secret caves are going to impress you. What else?

All boats and dinghy used for excursions are equipped with awnings that cover 3/4 (three quarters) of the vehicle to shelter from the sun.

Keep dreaming from home and explore the surrounding area of San Vito Lo Capo with a small video.

Or book your well-deserved beach holiday now.
